Compass Rose Boat Training serves the Newburyport, MA area and was founded by Captain Gig Michaud, a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain (Master) and retired Navy Captain with a lifetime of experience on the ocean. From family boating adventures to service aboard four Navy ships — and ownership of several boats of his own — Captain Gig has spent his life on the water.
He brings that deep knowledge and passion to every training, helping clients turn uncertainty and inexperience into confidence and enjoyment. Captain Gig truly loves sharing his passion for the ocean, and his goal is to make boating safe, comfortable, and fun for you and your family.
When you call Captain Gig, you take the first step toward building the confidence, knowledge, and experience needed to operate your boat with ease and relaxation. He will teach you how to dock your boat in the swift currents of the Merrimack River, navigate ports throughout the North Shore of Boston, operate your boat smoothly, and understand the fundamentals of true boating seamanship. You’ll also learn how to confidently use your GPS to navigate anywhere on the ocean.
As part of your training, Captain Gig will show you how to read other boaters’ movements, clearly signal your intentions, understand right-of-way rules, and maneuver safely in busy waterways. He will also help you overcome any fear of entering or exiting the Merrimack River mouth, teaching you when it’s safe to go out, when to stay in, and how to tell the difference — so you can make informed, confident decisions every time.
Once your training is complete, your journey on the ocean truly begins — opening the door to new ports, beautiful beaches, and unforgettable adventures along the coast with your family.

Captain Gig has trained several hundred boaters over the years, and has gained a reputation of making the training extremely thorough, while having so much fun learning. Captain Gig’s outgoing personality helps to keep you at ease, laugh often, and you will feel comfortable while learning. Once your training is completed, Captain Gig is available to answer any future questions that you may have, at no charge, all you have to do is call him.
You will learn to enjoy your boat without the worry of getting underway from your Dock, or the fear, once underway, of now having to return to your Dock. His Training will allow you to not worry about what the tides are doing, what the currents are doing, and will allow you to go out WHEN YOU AND YOUR FAMILY WANT TO GO without fear of currents.
